Mexican filmmaker Ángeles Cruz returns to her Indigenous community in Oaxaca for her second feature, a tender tale of loss inspired by her own childhood. Valentina’s world shatters when her beloved father drowns in a nearby river. Refusing to accept the body at the funeral, she becomes convinced he’s still alive and will return. Her conviction deepens after she falls into the same river and hears his voice speaking Mixtec—a language she’s never learned. As she waits for another message, Valentina enlists her friend Pedro to teach her Mixtec, even as her belief begins to affect her family and school life. Valentina or the Serenity is an exploration of love and mortality through a child’s eyes, and ultimately an uplifting ode to life.

La cineasta mexicana Ángeles Cruz regresa a su comunidad indígena en Oaxaca para su segundo largometraje, un tierno relato sobre la pérdida inspirado en su propia infancia. El mundo de Valentina se desmorona cuando su querido padre muere ahogado en un río cercano. Al negarse a aceptar el cuerpo en el funeral, ella está convencida de que sigue vivo y volverá. Su convicción se intensifica cuando cae accidentalmente al mismo río y escucha su voz hablándole en mixteco, una lengua que nunca ha aprendido. Mientras espera un nuevo mensaje, Valentina le pide a su amigo Pedro que le enseñe mixteco, aunque su fe empieza a afectar tanto a su familia como a su vida escolar. Valentina o la serenidad es una exploración del amor y la mortalidad desde la mirada de una niña, y por encima de todo, un canto esperanzador a la vida.
